An Huỳnh, Master’s in Clinical Psychology

About Me:

Hi there! I'm An Huỳnh, a therapist and researcher who grew up both in Vietnam and America. I have a Master's degree in Clinical Psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology, a Bachelor’s degree from UC Berkeley, and currently pursuing my Ph.D. in International Psychology through The Chicago School. My own journey between Vietnam and America has given me a special understanding of the ups and downs of navigating different cultures and personal growth.

I blend Western therapy methods (Psychodynamic, Dialectical Behavorial Therapy, Transactional Analysis) with an understanding of Eastern culture and traditions. My research focuses on intergenerational trauma and resilience among the Southeast Asian diaspora, which directly shapes how I help my clients:

  1. I understand the unique challenges of balancing multiple cultural identities.

  2. I can spot and address deep-rooted issues that might come from family or historical experiences.

  3. I help you recognize and build on your own strength and resilience.

  4. I have special insight into family relationships and dynamics in our community.

I've published in the Asian American Journal of Psychology and presented at major psychology conferences (APA, WPA). This ongoing research ensures that the help I offer is based on the most up-to-date understanding of mental health in our community. I’ve also worked over 7 years in educational and community mental health settings supporting youth, young adults, and their families. All of this helps me offer care that's sensitive to our culture and based on what's been proven to work, tailored to what our community needs as it grows and develops.

I am a member of the American Psychological Association (APA) and Asian American Psychological Association (AAPA). My work is further informed by specialized training in Compassionate Inquiry by Dr. Gabor Maté, Somatic Embodiment & Regulation Strategies by Linda Thai, and Dynamic Cultural Integration Therapy by Dr. Mankit Li.

Areas I Can Help With:

‣ Childhood experiences and family trauma that still affect you

‣ Finding your identity and adjusting to life in modern Vietnam

‣ Family relationships and dynamics (intergenerational patterns, cultural dissonance)

‣ Emotional health (dealing with worry, emptiness, sadness, or stress)

‣ Big life changes (moving locations, new job, relationship transitions)

‣ Feelings of belonging, especially for young professionals and expats

How I Work:

I combine two main approaches (Psychodynamic and DBT) in therapy:

‣ One focuses on the present, teaching you skills like mindfulness and how to handle your emotions better in everyday life. (DBT)

‣ The other looks at how your past experiences, including your family and culture, shape how you act and relate to others now. (Psychodynamic)

By integrating both, we'll work on your current problems while also understanding where they come from. This can lead to deeper, longer-lasting healing and personal growth.

Services and Costs:

‣ Each therapy session (60 minutes) costs 1,200,000 VND (~$50 USD)

‣ You can choose between meeting in person (in Ho Chi Minh City) or online

‣ I offer lower rates for students and others who might need financial help

Language: English and/or Vietnamese

Your Privacy:

Keeping your information private is really important to me. Everything you share in our sessions stays between us, except in rare cases where someone might be in danger.
